Desensitizing
An example of such an object might be a plastic bag suddenly blowing across the path of horse
and rider, which, if the horse has not been properly desensitized, could result in spooking. Spooking is potentially dangerous,
as it can result in fallen riders or horses bolting into traffic. A typical method to desensitize the horse to such an object
is to tie a plastic bag to the end of a stick and, through multiple sessions, slowly get the horse used to the object. The
sessions include waving the bag in the air, rubbing the horse's body, face and legs with it, and ultimately whipping
the bag against the ground near the horse's feet. I Also use a verity of objects balloon's tarps or a Ball. What ever
I may have around. I try an make this fun for the horse. It's best to use horses natural curiosity. This
Also is very beneficial for establish trust to develop a true partnership and leader ship between you and the horse. These
tactic's are also a way I evaluate a horse. To get into there head. To show me if they are more right brained or
left brained. Timid or Brave there strength's and weakness's. And where I
need to start Bluiding. To lay the the block's for a Solid foundation.
Ground Manner's This is very important. The horse must respect you space. Lead properly, Stand still
while you mount. To stand tied and handle the feet. Among several other issue's that will carry over in the saddle.
I also like to teach all horses I train to enter tight spaces. This could some day life be a life saver. I also teach
your horse to load an unload safely from horse trailer. I also know if a horse want's to be hard headed don't
be hard on the horse, Allow the horse be hard on them self. The horse will find your way is easier an summit and
in turn .All the while developing Leader ship trust and a mutual respect, eventully true partnership.
Saddle Training When I saddle a horse young or older for the first time. Before I even set saddle on there back. I Have
already introduced the sight/smell of saddle. I have little tactics I like to use. One is make this fun for the horse
I use the horse's natural curiosity. When all is good .I start by just setting saddle on horse. Never
Cinch horse at this point. I simply move horse out in the round pen an let the saddle fall to the ground. I keeping doing
so until horse is unmoved or unsettled by it all together. To cinch horse and teach him the feel of cinch and feel of
saddle while cinched. When Fully desensitized to saddling. I move to cir single and long rein's
While fully sacked out. . After horse is standing still tied excepting saddle or some call it sacking out. And excepting
bit or Bosal, Under stand's the commands and is responsive . Giving to pressure an release understand
rein cue's . When horse is confidant and stands allowing me mount an un mount. This is where the horse
an I have a complete understanding and Trust. I am not doing any thing that the horse is not ready for, The horse
is fully excepting me as its leader an has giving me the full trust. This is where I take the most joy. Because
this is where the horse an I become one. This where the horse an I develop a true partnership. We are
ONE.
Ponying up/First ride: This is where I take your horse from the round pen, Fully sacked out
in all there new fancy dud's. Saddle, breast collar, Bridle an reins. While I ride my one of mount's or
horse in training who is mostly finished. I start out in the pasture here. And we move out on roads an trails. This will Acclimate
them to new sight's and sound's like traffic an many more thing's.This is also a test.To see if there are any
wholes in training. A horse will be more confident in a place he familiar with. Even thou I have already desensitized
the horse in many ways an established leadership. They can get a Little skittish. Mostly so when they are crossing water an
so forth, I find that all horses just LOVE this. After a few trips we are ready for our first ride out on the trail.
Finished Training: I teach the horse to achieving collection, Rounding
up, Useing there hind end, correct head posture, suppleness, Rhythm, half halts, Flying lead changes, Side pass,
Rollover's , Backing up. Moving off pressure. I'm a capable trainer in Western an English riding tactics.
"I
prefer "Natural Horsemanship" methods; pressure and release. I feel each trainer has something to teach
and do not prefer one particular method over another. Each horse is an individual and it just doesn't make
sense to pick one method and stick with it. I have participated in many natural horsemanship clinics, as
well as some draft horse clinics. I take bits and pieces from each clinic, book and video and combine that with
my own experiences to find the best way to work with a particular horse. I am continually looking to expand my
knowledge, and will continue to read new (and new to me) training books, watch videos and attend clinics. I want to focus on building a strong, willing partnership between horse and human-both on the ground and in the saddle.
When you create a willing partnership with your horse you will both be happier. I want to show horses and
people how to achieve this partnership. I also feel strongly that every horse deserves a chance, and thoroughly
enjoy working with "problem horses." Whether the horse comes from a sketchy past or has simply had little
to no training, most horses will come around in time-if given a chance..."
